The new Russian system is defined as a profile-genetic one unlike the earlier Russian systems, where the emphasis was put on the agents of soil formation. The major principle of the new system is the priority of soil properties, namely, the profile composition. However, the choice of properties used as criteria for soil diagnostics performed via diagnostic horizons and features, is controlled by the concepts on soil genesis.
