The painting of plastic parts by conventional liquid coatings has presented many problems to the manufacturer, including intensive labor for painting and material handling, environmental compliance difficulties, and low coating utilization efficiencies, all of which add substantial cost to the finished product. The introduction of injection in-mold coatings (IMC) for sheet molding compound (SMC) in the late 70s successfully addressed many of the problems.
