Just months after his election to the presidency of the AFL-CIO, John Sweeney pushed through a significant dues increase for all union members. It was to establish a $35 million "political education" fund which would pay for a massive advertising campaign to discourage voters from reelecting 75 members of the 104th Congress. It doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out who these 75 members are, what their political persuasion is and that they form the backbone of the most pro-business and reform-minded Congress in 40 years.
