In recent months, I've been asked by some readers of this column and students of my classes to write about the basic underlying rules of sensor implementation in tooling. In other words, what are the guiding standards that would create the ideal environment for sensors in a metal-forming shop. After much thought on this, I've come up with the following five expectations that I would have for any shop that is serious about changing their paradigm from a company that smashes tooling to one that has eliminated die smash-ups and wants to seriously pursue automated part dimensioning.
