1. - In the above article [translator's note: Reed, LJ. (1921): Fitting straight lines; Metron, v. 1, n. 3, pp. 54-61] Dr. Reed examines and solves the problem of determining the straight line fitting points of a plan so that the sum of the squares of the distances between the points themselves and the interpolating straight line is minimum. This method of interpolation was suggested, as Reed remarks, since 1901 by Pearson [translator's note: Pearson, K. (1901): On Lines and Planes of Closest Fit to Systems of Points in Space; Philosophical Magazine, v. 2, n. 6, pp. 559-572], who also applied it both to the problem considered by Reed, and to that of determining a plane fitting points lying to different planes. The article by Reed deserves interest, for the simple form with which the solution is exposed, and because it pays attention to a problem almost forgotten, and that is also of considerable importance.
