Four decades in, the American culture war has effectively eroded all notions of a public sphere, and art's edifying role within it. Jody Patterson's book Modernism for the Masses explores the Works Progress Administration initiative, which marked the last time in the country's history where art, politics, and redistributive policies meaningfully converged. As Patterson acknowledges, the era of "federally funded culture" was not designed to last.
