When Chris Kabel decided to complete a residency at the European Ceramic Workcentre, he had one rule. "I went there with the idea that I did not want to make vases, because I thought most people that go there make them," says the Dutch designer. "Then all the reasons that I had in my head for not making vases actually became reasons to make them." But rather than taking a conventional approach, Kabel's interpretation, called the Hidden Vase, is an "invisible" vessel whose form, partly inspired by the function of a chicken waterer, is both aesthetically pleasing and utilitarian. Flowers are placed around the water container rather than within, allowing arrangements to stay fresher longer and partly conceal the glass vase. The project, which began in 2005, started off as a photo exhibit where materials for the first prototypes were sourced from local thrift shops. Over the years, Kabel continued refining its parts-the wire frame, the ceramic plate, and the glass bottle-to Solve all its structural problems. The collection, manufactured by Valerie Objects, is available in four colorways, as well as a clear version.
