摘要

The eastern pipistrelle (Pipistrellus subflavus) is a small insectivorous bat that soon will be declared a species of "special concern" by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. There are currently records of only 24 different pipistrelles in the state. Twenty-three of these bats were found while hibernating—three at Tippy Dam in the northern Lower Peninsula and 20 in various abandoned mines of the western Upper Peninsula. A year-round, reproducing population likely exists in the Upper Peninsula, but the status of the species in the northern Lower Peninsula is not clear. The only nonhibernating individual is from Berrien County, in southern Lower Michigan; this bat probably was a vagrant and not indicative of a resident population. The most serious threat to the continued existence of the eastern pipistrelle in Michigan may be the closure of abandoned mines that are used as hibernation sites.
