As any good librarian will tell you, performing authority control on the Library's catalog to ensure accuracy and cross-references to access points for patrons is very important to the quality of the data the researcher receives. The EMU library has been doing this work since time immemorial; unfortunately, this same work takes quite a bit of time to get right - especially with the ever changing Library of Congress Subject Headings. We estimated that the cataloging staff spent twenty work hours a week on this. In our climate of ever shrinking staffs, couldn't this be done more efficiently?
