Changes in Fish Assemblages in Michigan Lakes since the 1950s

A comparison was made of the species of fishes found in 35 lakes in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan sampled in the 1950s with duplicate samples taken in 2003-2004. These lakes have been subjected to many perturbations in the past 50 years. Increased habitation on most lakes and recreational boating contributing to physical and biological changes have been noted, but not quantified. Stocking of fishes not native to the lake, treatment for control of aquatic plants, and some fish eradication practices have been recorded on many of the lakes. For all fishes in combined lakes, the Sorenson's index of similarity was 0.90. The mean index for individual lakes was 0.67. The mean number of species found in the lakes in the 1950s sample was 13.3 and in the present sample 11.8. The median number of species in the past was significantly greater than that in the present. Mean seining effort was greater in the present sample (121.7 minutes) than in the past (87-1 minutes) which suggests some species may be less abundant or less widely distributed now than 50 years ago. A plot of the frequency of occurrence of fishes for the 35 lakes, present against past, suggests (more than 50% change) the golden shiner, lake chubsucker, yellow bullhead, and grass pickerel are less common now, and the spotfin shiner and warmouth are more common. For the 35 lakes considered, the assemblages of fishes have changed little. Although the abundance of many populations appears to be reduced, the species involved appear to be resilient.
