The January Thaw in Southern Michigan and Wisconsin, 1950-1999

Is there a fabled "January Thaw" in the western Great Lakes? This paper examines daily temperatures at two stations of the same latitude but situated differently to the inland sea of Lake Michigan: East Lansing, Michigan, to the east, and Madison, Wisconsin to the west. A thaw is defined as three days with a mean temperature above 0℃. Results showed that for East Lansing, January thaws are numerous, sometimes multiples in a given year. February thaws are even more numerous. For Madison, there are January thaws, but fewer than in East Lansing. Like East Lansing, however, February thaws are more numerous than January thaws. Years have passed, however, with no thaws at either station. Parametric and non-parametric statistical tests are performed. There is no "revenge" for a January thaw, that is, a resurgence of very cold weather (-10℃). Finally, a large sample of daily mean temperatures at Madison exhibits a period in late January warmer than intuitively expected, but not dramatically so.
