Frank McCourt's memoir of his poverty-stricken childhood in Ireland, Andela's Ashes, testifies to the ability of beautiful prose to house terrible stories. Although the author himself describes his book as "an epic of woe," reviewers Are quick to cite the striking dualities in Angela's Ashes (Sullivan 1996, 26). Mary Gordon, quoted on the book's jacket, finds McCourt's tale both "somber And lively."
