The terrible catastrophe that the Great War was, beyond the countless tragedies that it caused, acted on technological development as a powerful engine. It is no exaggeration to say that the discoveries and innovations that took place between the summer of 1914 and the end of 1918 exceeded by far all those that appeared in the previous half-century (which, in its turn, was a period among the most fruitful in history). Upon closer inspection, however, in most cases these were neither original contributions nor new creations without a basis, but rather functional improvements and refinements.%Con questo articolo si inaugura una serie dedicata alle invenzioni fatte durante la Grande Guerra per scopi militari. Scoperte e oggetti che hanno avuto in seguito un enorme successo nella vita civile, entrando nell'uso quotidiano di milioni di persone che ne ignorano la provenienza.
