摘要

With an estimated population of about 66 million people, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the poorest Countries in the world and it is heavily dependent on international aid despite its enormous natural wealth. The violent and bloody inter-ethnic civil wars have been added to those against regular armies of neighbouring Countries and gangs of fierce criminals.%Il 12 settembre 1876, Leopoldo Il Re del Belgio riunì a Bruxelles una Conferenza geografica internazionale per decidere la fondazione di una Associazione Internazionale Africana destinata a studiare e valorizzare l'Africa centrale, compresa la lotta contro la diffusa piaga della tratta dei negri. Il Sovrano ottenne il riconoscimento di uno Stato Libero del Congo durante la Conferenza di Berlino nel 1885, posto sotto la sua diretta sovranità, e il Paese venne ufficialmente annesso al Belgio il 5 novembre 1908.
