Se fino alla fine del secolo, infatti, essa era prevalentemente focalizzata nel rinsaldare i rapporti con l'Occidente e con l'Europa in particolare, negli ultimi anni si è rivolta soprattutto al Medio Oriente.%During the last decade, Turkey's foreign policy has seen a radical transformation, more active tones and a significant shift of its centre of gravity. Up to the end of the century, it was mainly focused on strengthening relations with the West and especially Europe. In the last years its policy has been directed mainly to the Middle East. Consequently, a great political split occurred in the Country between those who are faithful to the idea of the "Ke-malist" secular Republic and the advocates of the neo-Ottoman Islam. The eastward displacement of the Turkish centre of gravity remains an indisputable fact, as well as the desire to make Turkey a reference point for the Middle Eastern Muslim world. Nonetheless, Turkish leadership is well aware that it cannot afford moving apart from NATO and EU.
