When people imagine the Vietnam War, they typically envision infantrymen stalking through restrictive jungles or warplanes dropping bombs and incendiaries. It is generally not appreciated as a conflict where armored or mechanized forces played an important role in fighting the North Vietnamese army (NVA). William C. Haponski, a retired Army colonel, aims to correct this perception with a well-written and balanced memoir about his time as the commander of the 1st Squadron, 4th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, north of Saigon in the wake of the Tet Offensive.
