Moon Jae-in, the current President of the Republic of Korea (ROK), has recently named economy and defence as two main pillars, "that help to sustain the nation." To accomplish this goal, he announced his plan to increase the defence budget from 2.4% of the GDP to 2.9% of the GDP within five years. The budget requested for 2018 is U$38.8 billion, up from $35.9 billion in 2017. An officially declared priority is to enhance the capabilities of three strategic elements: the Kill Chain (KC), Korean Air and Missile Defence (KAMD) and the Korea Massive Punishment and Retaliation (KMPR).
