The Governor General is the titular Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Armed Forces (CF). The CF remains joint with a unified command structure at the national level, but the previous designations of Land Forces Command (LFC), Maritime Command (MARCOM) and Air Command (AIRCOM) have been dropped and the historical names of Canadian Army, Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force have been reinstated. The Minister of National Defence is responsible for management and direction of the Canadian Armed Forces and all matters relating to National Defence. The Minister's responsibilities include construction and maintenance of defence infrastructure and works needed to support the Canadian Armed Forces across Canada, as well as research relating to defence and security science and technology, providing equipment and technology advantages needed to defend Canada's interests. The Minister of National Defence is also Lead Minister for Search and Rescue within the federal government.
