The Arab states started becoming major buyers of armaments and serious defence spenders already some time ago - but the trend has been reinforced by the turmoil of the past few years in the region. What is new and distinctive about the current phase is their apparent determination, to different degrees and in different forms, also to become more self-reliant in this domain -operationally as well as technologically.
