In France, Marine Le Pen's National Front (FN) has become more popular than ever. Once viewed as an illegitimate, radical fringe party, FN has become France's most popular party, claiming a historic victory in the first round of regional elections early December, winning 28% of the vote. FN did not win control of any of France's 13 metropolitan regions in the second round of voting in local elections, though. But that is not because the party is not growing in popularity or because French voters are rejecting its xenophobic campaign messages. Were it not for some tactical manoeuvring on the part of her Socialist opponents, who withdrew candidates from three regions, Le Pen, who aspires to be elected France's President in 2017, and her niece, Marion Marechal-Le Pen, would have almost certainly won at least two regional presidencies. One thing is clear: France is looking for change.
