In today's conflicts without front lines and where threats can come from any direction at any time, the drive to provide a true panoramic view from under armour is a powerful one and systems of cameras linked to large screen and even helmet-mounted displays with augmented reality are set to transform the way future crews operate their vehicles and understand their environment. While there is more to situational awareness (SA) than being able to see, all round vision is a critical element that has always been problematic for armoured vehicle (AV) crews, so much so that the driver and commander have always spent most of their time with their heads out of hatches, only buttoning up when the threat from flying bullets and shrapnel force them to.
