The changing nature of the operational environment, encompassing conduct of operations by small teams operating at reach, has illustrated increasing demand, with Over The Horizon (OTH) or Beyond Line of Sight (BLOS) technology enabling such linkages. Without an ability to transmit and receive voice communications and/or data to and from a headquarters element to deployed assets, military expeditionary operations run the risk of quickly becoming redundant. According to communications specialist Hughes Defense and Intelligence Systems, BLOS communications comprise a critical component to any expeditionary military operation. Speaking to MT, a company spokesperson described how advances in airborne broadband technology could enable, "cost-effective communications to aid situational awareness on the ground for military reconnaissance, border patrols, and other government and commercial applications."
