Tomorrow's conflicts will not be easily categorised into conventional or irregular. This article looks at the emerging character of conflict, which is much more complicated than that. Technologically speaking, the civilised world's post-Cold-War adversaries have proved very creative, flexible, and adaptive toward goals that have been universally murderous and destructive. They have taken a mix-and-match approach, fitting conventional and innovative technologies and tactics to the task in hand, an approach that could be seen as an example of what has come to be known as hybrid warfare, but calling it that is controversial and may even cloud thinking about the best strategies, tactics and technologies to use in response.
