The Republic of Djibouti, a small country with a large strategic importance, lies at the heart of the troubled hot spots in the Horn of Africa, at the crossroads of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden; bordered by Eritrea, Ethiopia and Somalia, and just across the Gulf of Aden from Yemen, now a war zone. Of prime importance in the world of international geopolitics, Djibouti is a country that hosts overseas armed forces, secret service agencies, refugees, aid organisations, and wheeler-dealers. With a population of less than one million, it is playing one superpower off against another, namely the US and China.
