In 2009, Singapore's Special Forces were unified under a single command - the Singapore Special Operations Task Force (SOTF) - in response to growing concerns regarding terrorism, triggered in part by the complex attacks witnessed in Mumbai the previous year. MT looks at the SOTF's force elements, exercises, and materiel options. Singapore's Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister, Teo Chee Hean highlighted capability gaps concerning counter- and anti-piracy operations; as well as CBRNE specialisms: "You have to deal with [threats] at sea, at shore, in buildings, on aeroplanes, ships and coastlines and so on, so you do need to bring together these capabilities, develop them in a much more complete, coherent and integrated way," referring to a requirement to create a force capable of operating in land, sea and air environments.
