Nanosatellites (nanosat) are an important innovation in satellite technology. Their low cost and flexible design will likely help scientists conduct new experiments in space and obtain more images of Earth. In the short or even medium term, nanosats might not capture or disrupt many of the commercial market segments currently served by larger satellites, but they do lower the barriers to launching a useful object into space. As a result, they will likely attract increased attention from investors, the public, and enterprise customers. Given their appeal, will nanosats shake up the satellite business the same way personal computers, MP3 players, and smartphones have disrupted their own respective industries?
