摘要

An evolving contemporary operating environment covering conventional and unconventional warfare shows the Indian Armed Forces (InAF) extending its reach across a variety of terrain with an increasing reliance upon unmanned technology. This article looks at the Indian MoD's considerations of unmanned assets, particularly UAVs, to help to reduce "boots on the ground." To satisfy requirements, the Indian government has opted for a hybrid approach comprising procurement of mature, international solutions, particularly from Israel, while also pursuing internal R&D efforts including the development of a next-generation UCAV. Speaking at the "India's Internal Security and UAV" seminar on 14 December 2015, government and military officials explained how UAVs could be employed beyond traditional military operations such as COIN and counter-terrorism (CT) for surveillance of critical national infrastructure including oil refineries and pipelines as well as humanitarian aid/disaster relief, traffic management and crime detection.
