摘要

The contemporary operating environment represents a busy one for international SOF organisations and this article only touches on global deployments. Terrorist attacks across mainland Europe and North America have also seen a renewed reliance upon the utility of SOF in internal security operations, particularly counter-terrorism (CT) tasks. In an age of fiscal uncertainty, SOF units continue to witness increasing investment worldwide with governments seeking to optimise their force multiplying effects at home and abroad. It is exactly these types of special operations activities that can have disproportionate affect for the resources and personnel employed, although SOF remains a limited resource which must be carefully managed as their utility increases. Ongoing operations against the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Syria and Iraq represent a perfect example of this trend with multiple NATO and partner nations providing SOF teams to "train, advise and assist" indigenous SOF teams on the ground, as well as provide specialist skills including CAS through the provision of Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs).
