Modularity is a very attractive concept, providing customers with equipment tailored to their exact needs, while manufacturers maximise their return on investment. Speed is another benefit, while weight and volume are always critical in spacecraft, and modular systems can end up being heavier and bulkier than some alternatives. This article looks at the promise of time-scales between specifying and ordering a spacecraft and getting it into orbit cut from years to months or less. Modularity requires investment in infrastructure, such as standardised mechanical, electrical, cooling, and data interfaces; and impacts numerous other issues, such as electromagnetic shielding and thermal management. Nevertheless, the idea has spawned efforts such as the USAF's Modular Space Vehicle (MSV) programme. MSV was to have a multi-mission radio frequency payload, initially serving as a synthetic aperture radar, until changed priorities within the USAF's Operationally Responsive Space (ORS) office led to its cancellation. However, industry persevered with key concepts, Sierra Nevada Corp. (SNC), for example, using the Multi-Mission Space Vehicle (MMSV) flexible, scalable bus architecture as the basis for its current offerings.
