Germany has radically transformed its military. Germany's defence white paper published on 13 July 2016 shows how dramatically the nation's attitude toward its military has changed: "Countering security threats ...to our free and safe world trade and supply routes," is now part of the mission of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr). The 2016 white paper marks a major shift for the country. "Germany is prepared to provide a substantial, decisive and early stimulus to the international debate, to accept responsibility, and to assume leadership," the paper states. The paper called on Germany to increase its annual defence spending from €36-60 billion, meaning Germany's defence budget is rising.
