The Polish National Defence Minister Antoni Macierewicz, of the moderate right-wing party Prawo and Sprawiedliwosc (Law and Justice), has recently announced several planned changes to the Polish military system. This also applies to a technical modernisation for 2013-2022 (aka PMT). This ambitious plan, worth approx. €30 billion, was introduced by the previous government. According to Macierewicz, PMT no longer corresponds to Poland's financial capabilities and military needs, which have changed due to recent geopolitical turbulences. The Minister believes the main challenges to be air threats, and therefore a top priority is now air and missile defence. In order to strengthen this segment, Macierewicz recently selected the Raytheon PATRIOT system, but, at the same time, wants to continue technical dialogue with Lockheed Martin about MEADS.
