Today's soldier might be forgiven for thinking that the job now mainly consists of carrying batteries around. A load of 16-20lb (7-9kg) in batteries alone is not untypical to sustain electrical needs through a 72 hour mission, with loads of up to 44lbs (20kg) not unheard of. While batteries with greater energy density and less power-hungry equipment are part of the answer, complemented by more flexible battery chargers and more practical fuel cell generators, there is growing interest in energy harvesting. Solar panels have become better established in recent years and the technology is improving rapidly, but the human body itself is a renewed focus of interest. Systems that can use the energy expended in walking, which might otherwise be dispersed as heat, and wearable thermoelectric devices that turn heat directly into current are rapidly advancing.
