In the past 50 years journalism has changed radically with manual typewriters and copy paper replaced by total electronic production. These advances have proven a boon for journalists, but technical innovation is not always matched and over the past decade some ominous developments in defence press relations (PR) must raise serious concerns. Defence is important because it ensures both national and international security while requiring a considerable investment of public and private finance. It is important, therefore, that the public, politicians and industry be educated and informed about the issues. These can range from nuclear targeting to the disposal of rubbish at sea, and defence journalists are the people who try to ignore the 'spin' of politicians, the services and industry to try to provide an impartial explanation of these issues.
