摘要

How can training be improved to overcome today's challenges?rnIn the beginning there were Apprentices who were contracted to a skilled workman for many years before being allowed to work on their own. In the Middle Ages the system was administered by trade Guilds, the word "Guild" coming from the Gold in their funds. In modern terminology this was "on the job training" under close supervision. In the engineering area there was hazard in constructing buildings and ships and there were frequent accidents. When steam power and explosives came along, hazards increased and a more organised system of training was required. This was accentuated with the advent of petrol engines and aircraft. In wars such as 1914-18 and 1939-45 there was no time to follow the leisurely apprentice system, and "mass production" replaced individual craftsmanship. This meant that individual jobs were simpler, less training was required, but tasks were repetitive and it was a challenge to keep workers from becoming bored. After 1945 we enter the modern era with electronics, computers, jet engines and structures in lighter materials closer to their limits. One problem with "on the job" training is that if a mistake is made, the real equipment suffers. Or, if the process is slow, perhaps due to natural caution or the extra time taken for an instructor to supervise a student, the equipment is out of service for longer. One answer is to construct a Training Rig on which people can be checked out before going on to the real equipment. Several rigs can be used for different tasks, and their design can be optimised for training rather than operations. After all, the main equipment is designed for operating, not for training. In contrast, a Training Rig can be made more robust than the main equipment in areas that will be subject to repetitive wear.
