New technologies in air traffic control allow for leaner manning, re-designating the controller as more of a systems manager overseeing decisions made by automated systems. Perhaps manual intervention is needed to resolve situations that exceed a systems capacity to judge an ad hoc human situation with human intuition. MT examines what is available now - or in short term development - that will be the foundation for more automated systems.
