Communications for the individual soldier is not just about radios. The integration of secure, encrypted, frequency agile and reliable radio communications is still the lynchpin on which the soldier, and the units in which he or she operates, relies - but it is no longer enough in and of itself. There is a paradigm shift in the approach to providing effective communications. The buzz words now in vogue are "smaller, lighter, faster" Not a brand spanking new philosophy, to be sure, but there is a renewed emphasis on them that now colours every development, enhancement and 'tweak' decision from the industry supplier to the quartermaster issuing equipment at the sharp end of the spectrum.
