It is highly likely that Russian SOF are now operating on the ground in Syria, while critical questions remain regarding their mission statement, which will have a significant impact on the western-backed coalition operating in the same area. It appears Russian air strikes are now targeting both the so-called Islamic State (IS) targets to the East as well as anti-Assad forces including the Free Syria Army operating in the West of the country. Security sources suggested to MT that utility of Russian Special Purpose, or Spetsnaz, mission units to destroy IS positions could well do the West's "dirty work" for them. However, there are far wider implications regarding Russian SOF participation against western-backed bodies seeking to overthrow Assad.
