According to strategy and management sources, Qatar's large increase in annual defence spending from around half a billion US Dollars in 2011 to around $1 billion in 2013, and a projected $3.5 billion in 2015 is less dramatic than it first appears because it is skewed by two "enormous" buys of PATRIOT and Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile systems. Qatar also has an impressive shopping list of other big ticket items, for which long-time primary supplier France is facing stiff competition.
