Many fundamentals of survival on the front line - or the tactical edge -are profoundly affected by what soldiers wear, which has benefitted from numerous advances over the last decade, with plenty more to come. Special Operations Forces (SOF) in particular seek to be at the cutting edge of technology that can enhance soldier protection and survivability in extreme and high-threat environments. The US Program Executive Office (PEO) SOF Warrior, for example, has declared its interest in several technology areas including lighter ballistic protection, advanced signature management, very light and durable thermal insulation ("loft") materials, active and passive temperature control, and fire retardant materials that do not compromise other capabilities.
