Smaller and smarter missile systems for ASuW/strike/anti-shipping purposes, core common modular loitering weapons (utilising a common core design with adaptable modular elements) like the FIRESHADOW loitering munition from MBDA, and range-extended effectors for missile defence could replace entire families of current weapons across the range of land/sea/air platforms. Loitering weapons, which are capable of dynamic re-tasking, are specifically designed for pre-emptive targeting and hold targets within a defined area at risk for long periods of time. But the naval customer could also draw attention on new missile technology as found in the German IDAS concept the IDAS consortium (consisting of Diehl Defence, TKMS, and Roketsan) is presently preparing for additional testing, qualification, and series production. Another partner is Nammo, which develops and manufactures the rocket motor. However, the boom in innovative long- to medium-range concepts like IDAS is not reaching all corners of the military.
