Any student of military history, when considering the role played by Poland over the centuries, has to acknowledge that nation's prominence, versatility and indomitable spirit in matters of national defence. Some of the images that spring to mind are iconic and ageless: The infamous 'winged hussars' of the 16th and 17th Centuries; the charge of Napoleon's celebrated Polish Lancers up the Somosierra gorge in Spain in 1808; the ill-fated but unquestionably spirited charges of Polish cavalry against German tanks in 1939. History celebrates the Polish determination for independence and self-defence. And the 21st Century brings little change to that spirit. Poland is about the only European nation achieving the agreed level of defence expenditure as a percentage of Gross National Product, spending very nearly two percent. Its defence industry is undergoing radical change and transformation as it develops greater and better indigenous capability. The fundamental tenets of self-defence lie at the heart of Polish defence policy, with the 'Polish Shield' ballistic missile defence programme perhaps one of the most obvious and prominent expressions of that philosophy.
