JMs the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (formerly known as ISIS, now IS, aka Turbo-al-Qaida) continues its blitz across northern and central Iraq, the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, currently Iraq's most formidable military force, have emerged as the most credible military challenger to the jihadi threat. In the early days of IS' recent onslaught, the Peshmerga took the oil-rich city of Kirkuk, under the pretence of protecting it after the Iraqi Army fled. Since that expansion of Kurdish control, the Peshmerga have dug in around Kurdistan's borders in an attempt to deter any ISIS advance into its territory, but are completely outgunned, yet maintain a strong force...the ONLY force against IS (supported by airstrikes). Nevertheless, the Kurds say they badly need heavier weapons to stem the expansion of IS. A. Aziz Shwan A. Ahmed, Chief of Staff, in an interview mentioned: "We need everything, weapons, munitions, money…and we need it yesterday." Still, IS would have a serious conflict on its hands if it focused its offensive on Kurdistan. The Peshmerga number upwards of 190,000 official fighters, not counting militia members who can be called upon to swell its ranks, and who are coming in hourly from all over the world.
