Europe, as defined by the blue and gold flag that flies over almost every building in central Brussels, is home to a number of defence partnerships smaller than but no less effective than NATO. The Nordic Defence Cooperation (NORDEFCO) agreement, inked in November 2008, brings together all five Nordic nations in the areas of cooperative security, policy and procurement, and in so doing replaced three separate but interlinked collaborative arrangements. The Franco-British (or Anglo-French - depending on which side of the Channel/La Manche you live on) Defence and Security Cooperation Treaty, signed just one year later, holds great promise for collaboration between two of Europe's former 'honourable enemies' (to use the words of a certain French Emperor) in areas that include R&D, as well as requirements harmonisation and joint procurement.
