Jens Stoltenberg took up his post as NATO Secretary General on 1 October 2014. The former Norwegian Prime Minister (2000-2001 and 2005-2013) was appointed by the 28 Allies in March to succeed Anders Fogh Rasmussen as Secretary General. Fogh Rasmussen's term expired on Tuesday after five years and two months at the helm of the alliance. On the same day, Jens Stoltenberg chaired his first North Atlantic Council. The new Secretary General was welcomed to the headquarters by Deputy Secretary General Ambassador Alexander Vershbow, German Ambassador Martin Erdmann, the Dean of the Council, and the Deputy Chairman of the Military Committee, Lt.Gen.
