Affordable long range and precision guidance are highly sought-after attributes in large calibre gun ammunition, and both industry and government have been very active in this area during 2012. BAE Systems, Oto Melara and Raytheon have all successfully tested comparable systems. In October, BAE announced a successful series of firings of its 155mm Long-Range Land Attack Projectiles (LRLAP) at White Sands, NM/USA. A few months earlier, in May, Raytheon tested its EXCALIBUR round from Denel's G6 self-propelled 155mm artillery system, following this up with a record for a long-range artillery engagement "in theatre." Meanwhile, Oto Melara and Diehl Defence likewise enjoyed success with trials of its VULCANO munition at the Meppen proving ground in Germany.
