The German Army is looking for a replacement of the old general-purpose MG3 machine gun chambered for 7.62 × 51 mm. The follow-up will be the MG5 - a contender is the HK121 (7,62mm) - and should be procured as soon as possible. More than 17,000 have been requested by the Army, but until the MG5 can reach the troops, there is an offer by Rheinmetall Defence in cooperation with Tactics Group for an combat performance upgrade (KWS), which should deliver a significant combat effectiveness for today's missions and higher operating safety. The components of the KWS retrofit kit include; a Picatinny rail for additional sensors and devices, a buffered adjustable buttstock, a new safety selector with single shot setting, a swivel-mounted foldable carrying handle, a height adjustable bipod, a new sling and an integrated electronic shot counter (ESF).
