Relieving the weight burden on the dismounted soldier is also the purpose of the GUARDIUM-LS UGV from Israeli company G-NIUS, a joint venture between Elbit Systems and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). A variant of the GUARDIUM UGV in service with the IDF, the GUARDIUM-LS is described as a multipurpose autonomous UGV designed to replenish forward deployed troops with up to 1.2t of ammunition and supplies. The vehicle can be commanded either through mobile or portable terminals or operated in "mule" mode where it autonomously follows a squad. Besides combat logistic support, posited operational roles include route proving, base protection and ISTAR. Among the capabilities listed by the company are "superb" off-road manoeuvrability, and autonomous mission execution during which it can perform real-time obstacle detection and avoidance, functionality that the company said it has proven to be failsafe.
