摘要

"If we want things to stay as they are, things will have to change," says Prince Tancredi Confalonieri in Tomasi di Lampedusa's best-selling novel, "The Leopard" (those who haven't read it would hopefully at least have seen the award-winning movie with Burt Lancaster, Claudia Cardinale and Alain Delon at their respective best). It's 1860, and in Sicily the old feudal order is crumbling under the arrival of Garibaldi's "Red Skirts" and the process of Italian unification. For Prince Tancredi and his fellow noblemen to maintain their grip on all aspects of society and economy, "things will have to change" - that is, the upper class will have to find an accommodation with the new political reality. Much the same applies to the overall US military posture.
