摘要

Spending priorities in the forthcoming US FY13 defence budget request call for reductions in the end strength of the US Army and USMC, an increase in Special Operations Forces, and maintaining the number of big-deck carriers. The Pentagon's budget topline request is set at $525 billion for FY13 with an additional $88.4 billion for overseas contingency operations - mostly in Afghanistan. This is down from $531 billion and $115 billion, respectively, in FY12. After months of debate, contemplation and worry, on 26 January the wait was over. The Pentagon, Congress and the defence industry are now looking at an actual roadmap for what could happen to America's forces and programmes for the coming few years, one that will leave the services with diminished reach and contractors big and small wondering about their futures.
