The German Navy has an emerging requirement for a capability to provide high-volume/ high-lethality, long-range fire support from the sea. This also includes the use of extended-range, smart ammunition to deliver fast effects against time-sensitive targets with pin-point accuracy. Oto Melara (a Finmeccanica company) has been ordered in 2007 to deliver its newly developed 127mm/64-calibre LW (Lightweight) VULCANO naval gun for installation on board the upcoming four Type F-125 (BADEN-WUERTTEMBERG-class) frigates that are being constructed by ARGE F125 consisting of ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS) and Fr. Lurssen Went. A total of five guns will be received by the German Navy.
